About . . .

Our aim is to offer a place for photo enthusiasts to learn and to share across the diverse realms of photography. Our club season runs from September to June. Our club meets every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month during the season. Of course this is not always set in stone and members know to check our calendar of upcoming meetings and outing events. As of autumn 2022, our new home base is in a classroom at the St. Albert Catholic High school.

On the second Wednesday of each month, we host a guest speaker to present on various topics. The third Wednesday of the month is typically slated for a workshop targeting a variety of skill levels. The last session of each month is our “Submissions Night”, a friendly contest, with both themed and open categories. Photograph’s from our current and past contest winners are permanently displayed in our gallery archive. The images of present and past speak for themselves. Feel free to peruse the images, but please be aware that all images are copyrighted by the original creator and all right’s are reserved.

In addition to our planned meetings, the club also arranges photography outings throughout the year. While we attempt to keep the members-only calendar up to date, some trips are spur of the moment, and will be announced via e-mail communication. Our members keep their eyes peeled and their gear ready to go!

Maybe one of the worst kept secrets that tends to be associated with St. Albert Photography Club is Foto Friday. For several years now, members and non-members alike, have met at various locations in and around the Edmonton area on Friday mornings for a 2 hour photo walk, followed up at a nearby spot for lunch. These Foto Friday events are not planned or sanctioned by the SAPC executive, but we support the event by advertising the various locations on our website.

The St. Albert Photography Club was established 1992. On the occasion of our 20th anniversary, founding member Jan VanVeen offered the following reminiscence of the early days of the club.

Did you know that our first meeting was at St. Albert City Hall . . . in 1992, in a fancy room with swivel chairs overlooking the mighty” Sturgeon river. In attendance were Larry Huberdeau, Peter Pankiw, Doug Poon, Jan Vanveen and a few others (sorry I forgot your names). The reason for our existence was the same as now, to encourage each other to better photography. There was no photography club at the time, even though Kathy McKay did start one, but it was dissolved after they published the book “A Day in the Life of St. Albert”.

With the help of Deirdre Smart of the St. Albert Community Services, we advertised at Doug’s store, beside London Drugs, (Canadian Tire at that time). Since then, a lot of “film has gone through our cameras”. We had some contact with the Winnipeg South Photography Club as Reggie Steele (president of the Winnipeg club) visited us at the home of Larry Huberdeau. Fred Martin and Bill, and also Al Popil joined the club soon afterwards. Hope to have another 20 years again of “photographic” enjoyment.
